The first thing that comes to mind when planning for kayaking and rapid sports adventures is the safety issues of the sport itself. Of course these must be the priority but what you also need to consider is your personal physical safety. If you are not in good physical condition for these sports then you can do yourself some serious harm. It is automatically assumed that sports such as baseball require a great deal of physical stamina because it is so evident during the play of the sports. This is not as easily recognized when it comes to fighting the rapids. Skiing is another sport that can be somewhat deceiving in its demands as well.
You have to realize that keeping control and your sense of direction when riding the rapids is going to create a great deal of physical exertion on you. If you are not strong enough to withstand this then you could easily lose control of your raft or kayak.
Start by educating yourself as to the requirements of strength and stamina of this sport. You can begin by carefully observing those participating in the sport. Then do some research as to what the needs are when it comes to durability.
Then do an assessment of yourself. You will know if you are not in good physical shape. If you are dealing with excess weight or lack of exercise then begin to condition yourself by getting in better shape. Start with a diet and some healthy exercise and use the kayaking and rapid sports as your incentive to help you get there.
Also remember that even sports that are considered more laid back like tennis or even fishing has its only demands on the body. In addition to this if you are going to become actively in any sport it’s a wise idea to start with a good medical examination through your health care provider.

Kayaking is Fun If You Have a Paddle:
Kwik Tek Deluxe Kayak Paddle 2 sect Alum 84" Curved Blade
Search Amazon.com for spare kayak paddles
Just imagine! Being out in the middle of a river or lake with tall hills and cliffs of rock on either side of you. The fish are jumping in a distance and there is nothing but peace and tranquility all about you. Before you know it you have paddled for miles and have just become lost in your own thoughts.
Finally you decide to rest for a bit and you lay your paddle across your kayak while you grab a bit of a stretch. Then just as you do so a power boat whips by you, creates a great wave and oops! There goes your paddle over the side of your kayak. You watch in horror as your paddle slips away from your grasp, you now envision yourself with two need paddles which are unfortunately your hands. You study them carefully wishing at this moment they were a bit bigger.
This is a scenario that nobody every wants to find themselves in. Although we have added a touch of sad humor here it can actually create a very unsafe situation. The chances of you being able to paddle yourself back are remote, just as a result of the sheer exhaustion itself. You could find yourself stranded for hours until someone comes to rescue you.
You can save yourself from all of this grief by carrying a spare. You can purchase a back up paddle
that has a take apart shaft which makes it for easier storage. So do yourself a favor and make it a personal kayak rule that you never leave home or hit the water without a backup kayak paddle.
Happy kayaking
