How Not To Roll!

Classic Jackson Kayak Fun SeriesFollowing on from my previous blog, I found this video on You tube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elbGDS7EI-s
It really drills home to you the message of never going out without an experienced instructor or more behind you!  It was quite scary as to the length of time it took to rescue the poor guy!

Get loads of practice in, an experienced person would never have found themselves in this situation!

White Water Rapids.

When you first get into rapid sports you may find that the white water in the rapids is quite mesmerizing and perhaps a little awesome. It is quite impressive with its white colors and a enormous amount of bubbles that is created by the aeration of the unstable currents. To you as a newcomer these may seem like they are quite turbulent, but to many that are used to rapid sports they do not consider the white water rapids to be that turbulent
There are often different terms for the Whitewater of the rapids and sometimes it is referred to as being a section of water that contains many other different types of rapids
Quite often it will be referred to as Whitewater canoeing or Whitewater kayaking to by some rapid sports enthusiasts
Making the decision that you are going to participate in rapid sports means you must start educating yourself as to the different types of rapids that you will be enjoying. There are a lot of elements attached to the rapids that you must learn.
There are six categories of white rapids that you will have the opportunity to experience. You can start with the easiest being the first category and that is number one, then as you gain experience work your way up to the 6th level being the hardest.

If you work your way through all the white water levels and master the 6 then that rapid will probably be downgraded to a 5, as very few meet and beat the challenges of a level 6 rapid. The first level is flat water with few hazards and seems like an easy ride but it has its moments.
If you hit a rough challenge then you may want to portage. This means you go to land and carry your boat around that hazard on land rather than face the challenge.
You will be familiar with some of the terms before long.
It is imperative that you undertake proper tuition before even attempting to go out on the water.  Never go out alone and ensure you have all the correct safety gear with you.
